The father of former Executive Director Ralph Ayres passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009. Below is his obituary:
Robert Ayres
b. 8/6/1922 - d. 10/16/2009
Robert H. Ayres, age 87 of Chesterton, IN passed away on Friday October 16, 2009 at the Waters of Duneland Health Care Center in Chesterton. Robert was born on August 6, 1922 in Istanbul, Turkey to Thomas H. & Mary (Zervos) Ayres. A graduate, Magna Cum Laude from New York University, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre during WWII. He was a member of Lehigh Acres, FL American Legion Post 323. Robert was the Manager of Corporate Union Relations for Inland Steel, retiring in 1985. He was nationally recognized for his work by being inducted as a member of the American Iron & Steel Institute. He is survived by daughter: Donna P. Brown of Chesterton, sons: Ralph D. Ayres of Chesterton and Charles H. Ayres of Portage, by fiancée: Patricia A. Ryan of Chesterton, sister: Edith Boyd of Lehigh Acres, FL, grandchildren: Robert H. & Alec J. Ayres of Portage, and many nieces & nephews and several great nieces and great nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles H. Ayres & sister Emily Munson. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday October 20, 2009 at 2:30 pm at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN. Interment will follow at Chesterton Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday October 20, 2009 from 12 noon until time of service at 2:30 pm. Memorials for Robert may be made to the VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso, IN. www.ee-fh.com
