Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)

clears indiana senate COMMITTEE

 

INDIANAPOLIS – House Bill 1498, authored by retired teacher, Rep. William Ruppel (R-N. Manchester) and coauthored by Rep. David Niezgodski (D-South Bend), Rep. Randy Truitt (R-W. Lafayette), and Rep. Terry Goodin (D-Austin) and sponsored by Sen. Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn), Sen. Karen Tallian (D-Portage), Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport), and co-sponsored by Sen. Gary Dillon (R-Columbia City) passed the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor this morning with a vote of 9 to 2.  Testifying in support of the bill were Indiana Retired Teachers Association President Eugene Wease, President-Elect Nancy Tolson, and Executive Director Andrew P. Thomas.  Also testifying in support of the bill was Paul Chase representing AARP of Indiana.  The bill provides for a 2% increase payable to those who retired before July 2, 2001, and a 1% increase provided to those who retired after July 1, 2001, and before July 2, 2007.  These increases would be payable after December 31, 2009.  The bill now moves forward to the Indiana Senate Appropriations Committee.

 

The bill passed the Indiana House of Representatives on February 25, 2009, by a vote of 91 to 0.

 

The Indiana Retired Teachers Association was founded in 1950 to advocate for retired educators, to promote community leadership and service, and to encourage and support education initiatives in Indiana.  It currently has over 25,500 members.
