Representative Dennis Avery (D-Evansville) Introduces House Bill 1022 to Provide Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)

For Indiana’s Retired Teachers

INDIANAPOLIS – Representative Dennis Avery (D-Evansville) today introduced H.B. 1022 which would provide a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for Indiana’s retired educators. Rep. Avery authored the bill at the request of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA).

In introducing the legislation, Rep. Avery, a member of the influential House Ways and Means Committee, said, “In these times of economic uncertainty, our objective is to retain a COLA for retired teachers.”

Representative David L. Niezgodski (D-South Bend), Chairman of the House Labor Committee and the Pension Management Oversight Commission, is a coauthor.

Under H.B. 1022, a 2% increase would be payable to those who retired before July 2, 2001, and a 1% increase would be provided to those who retired after July 1, 2001, and before July 2, 2007.  These increases would be payable after December 31, 2009.

IRTA President Eugene Wease, of Crown Point, Indiana, stated: “We are grateful that Representative Avery has again taken the lead in helping to maintain retired teachers’ purchasing power and standard of living for those who have dedicated their professional careers to educating young Hoosiers.”

IRTA was founded in 1950 to advocate for retired educators, to promote community leadership and service, and to encourage and support education initiatives in Indiana. IRTA is the largest organization in Indiana which advocates for retired educators.

The 2009 legislative session will convene on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, and must adjourn no later than Wednesday, April 29, 2009.
