The 2008 Indiana Retired Teachers Appreciation Day
at the Indiana State House

The
Indiana Retired Teachers Appreciation Day, held in
the rotunda of the Indiana State House, was
sponsored and hosted by IRTA to
recognize and celebrate the contributions of
retired educators throughout Indiana.

IRTA President Eugene
Wease (left) welcomed attendees and recognized
honored guests, including AARP Indiana State
Director June Lyle (right).

The IRTA Outstanding
Retired Teacher Award was
presented by Governor Mitch Daniels (left) to
Edna Parker, a retired teacher and the world’s
longest living person at age 115.
Family members accepted the award on Edna's behalf.
Edna (right) resides at Heritage House convalescent
center in Shelbyville.

The IRTA Outstanding CASA
Volunteer Award was presented by
Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall Shepard
(left) to Harriett “Happy”
Curts. Happy's daughter accepted
the award on her behalf. Happy (right) is an
IRTA member and longtime CASA volunteer.

Indiana
State Representatives Sheila Klinker (left) and Greg
Porter (right) honored retired teachers with their
presence and their remarks. Legislators in
attendance included Senator Brent Steele and
Representatives Robert Behning, Phil Hinkle and Amos
Thomas.

The
Jackson Township Community Band from Brazil,
Indiana, under the direction of retired teacher Matt
Huber, provided entertaining music.
Special thanks to Congressman Steve Buyer for his
personal letter of support, which was presented at
the rally.
