Retired Teachers Community Hosts IRTA at Celebration Luncheon

Greenwood Village South, a continuing care retirement community founded by retired teachers, hosted a luncheon and tour for the IRTA Board of Directors in order to commemorate the inscription of the GVS cornerstone with the words "Indiana Retired Teachers Association." The cornerstone previously only noted the construction date of 1961. Greenwood Village South is located on U.S. 31 South in Greenwood, Indiana.

The event was arranged and hosted by GVS residents and History Committee members Mary Jane Phillippe, Keith Brown and Wes Charpie. Keith was instrumental in working directly with IRTA staff to arrange the event. As Chair of the GVS History Committee, Mary Jane served as luncheon speaker by providing IRTA guests with a detailed history of Greenwood Village South and the pioneering efforts of the early visionaries who founded GVS. Keith served as welcoming host by making introductions, and Keith and Wes also delivered personal remarks as part of the luncheon program. GVS Executive Director Brian Lane and Marketing Director Martha Mahoney joined the luncheon and provided an overview and tour of this fine facility.

The Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) and the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) began planning in 1947 for a project to provide elderly persons, on a non-profit basis, with housing facilities and services especially designed to meet the physical, social and psychological needs of the aged and contribute to their health, security, happiness and usefulness in longer living. The Indiana Retired Teachers Community - now known as Greenwood Village South - was incorporated in 1957. The Council of Greenwood Village was formed early in 1963 as an organization of residents to act on matters of common concern to both residents and administration. GVS residents were leading forces in organizing the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association, a local affiliate of IRTA, in 1966. This information is courtesy of the publication "Greenwood Village: Early History 1957-1969" compiled by Mary Jane (Beaman) Phillippe and Barbara Doty.

The Board of Directors of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association gratefully acknowledges the hospitality of Mary Jane Phillippe, Keith Brown and Wes Charpie, and GVS administrators Brian Lane and Martha Mahoney, for the gracious lunch and tour of the fine facility.
