HB 1205 (COLA and one time payment) Passes Out of House Committee 9 to 0

House Bill 1205, authored by Indiana State Rep. David Niezgodski, which provides a 1% COLA and a one time payment for TRF and PERF retirees, passed out of the House Labor and Employment Committee on January 12, 2010 UNANIMOUSLY with a bipartisan vote of 9 to 0.

Voting for HB 1205 were Rep. David Niezgodski, Rep. Dan Leonard, Rep. Charles Moseley, Rep. Matt Bell, Rep. John Bartlett, Rep. Doug Gutwein, Rep. Russell Stillwell, Rep. Greg Steuerwald, and Rep. Dennis Tyler. Please let these legislators know you appreciate their support.

Bob Kraft, President-Elect of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, appeared at the committee hearing and spoke in favor of the bill. Other testimony at the hearing pointed out that a COLA increase of 1.5% per year is assumed in the valuation of the Teacher Retirement Fund. Since the cost of HB 1205 is actually less than this 1.5% assumption, the bill is “revenue neutral.”

HB 1205 now goes to the House Ways and Means Committee for a vote before it goes to the full House of Representatives. This is a short session of the Indiana General Assembly, which must adjourn on or before March 14.
